The Harvard Crimson, or ‘The Crim’ as they call it, have joined forces to deliver the most powerful global essay writing competition around, The Harvard Crimson Global Essay Competition, or HCGEC 2021.
The Harvard Crimson is the daily student newspaper of Harvard University and was founded in 1873. It is the only daily newspaper in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and is run entirely by Harvard College undergraduates.

Registration is US$15 and is open to current high school students, aged 14-18 years old. The competition takes place in April 2021 and is 100% virtual, removing geographical barriers!

HCGEC believes that it’s important to cater to students with different interests, and therefore provides prompts from two different tracks: creative and argumentative (or persuasive). Each participant selects a prompt at the beginning of the competition and will submit a 500 word (max) essay.
The top five essays from each track (10) per region (5) will be invited to the global final round of the competition where
Global competitions are the perfect stepping stones to develop real-world experience, in theory, learned it the classroom and to network with peers.
The top six global winners will have their work endorsed by The Harvard Crimson, featured on the Official HCGEC Website, and have internships with ‘The Crim” Team. These are all highlights that will no doubt, make a university application stand out!
Participants will have access to best-in-class webinars and workshops with renowned professionals! The schedule will be released soon as we finalise our expert lineup. The 2021 global prizes include six (6) internships at The Harvard Crimson and eight (8) essays published on the official HCGEC website as well as Crimson credit, cash, and Harvard Merch!

Participants may be classified as ELL if they each meet all of the following requirements:

Do not come from a First Language English speaking family;

Social interactions are not primarily in English with individuals who speak English as their first language; and,

Have not spent more than one period of primary or secondary schooling in an education system where English is the language of command.
